An Eichler home tour is an excellent opportunity for both owners and enthusiasts to see examples of different models, and the improvements and renovations made by the owners kind enough to let us view their homes.

The San Mateo Highland Eichler home tour is coming this May 3rd & 4th from 10AM to 3PM featuring 10 homes, a restored vintage Airstream trailer, a historical documentary of the Highlands neighborhood, the film "People
in Glass Houses" (featuring my neighbors Scott and Mona), vintage cars, limited edition commemorative poster (see below), 9 midcentury modern artists, and much more.

The cost for the tour is $55 for a single day and $100 for the weekend.  Lunch is also available for an additional $12 or you can bring your own.  Reservations and additional information are available via www.eichlerhometour.org, and I’d recommend you make them sooner than later because space is limited.

Enjoy the tour, and I hope to see you there!

Eames, Eames everywhere

If you missed the debut of American Masters - Charles & Ray Eames: The Architect & The Painter on PBS tonight, you can look for the reruns (through Dec 27) on KQED on this page - or go see it in the cinema at The Balboa in the City this week for a very limited run.

Also, in the event you find yourself down in Southern California over the Holidays or early next year, there are a few Eames exhibits to check out:

* "Eames Designs: The Guest-Host Relationship" at the A&D Architecture and Design Museum through January 16, explores the designers' work, process and philosophy.

* "The Evolution of the Eames House Living Room" will transport their living room to LACMA until mid-April, with staging to demonstrate the evolution of the space.

* The Eames House itself is available for visits, though you must book in advance.  Details & contact info are on the page above about the Living Room exhibit.

Lastly, a short video from rapper Ice Cube (who studied Architectural drafting back in the day) paying tribute to the Eames'.

Artists’ Proposals on Display for Community Feedback

Are you curious about the artwork associated with the Castro Valley Boulevard Streetscape Improvement Project? Are you interested in giving feedback about the artists' proposals? Read on to learn how you can participate...

In July, a committee including seven Castro Valley residents plus County staff, and regional arts professionals selected six artists through an open, competitive process to submit proposals for thepublic artwork associated with the Castro Valley Boulevard Streetscape Improvement Project. The artists learned about the Castro Valley community and met community members at the Roundtable Event in late August, visited the Boulevard, and conducted their own research. They each made a unique proposal for the project. The Alameda County Arts Commission has made arrangements to display the proposals at two locations in Castro Valley in October and November. At these locations, community members can view illustrations of the proposed artworks, material samples, and written project information about the concepts and designs. Community members will be invited to submit written feedback about the proposals. The comments will be reviewed and strongly considered by the artist selection panel when they reconvene in November.

ARTISTS: Anne Marie Karlsen, Masayuki Nagase, Miriam Stahl, Paul Tzanetopoulos, Warner Williams, and Wowhaus.

Please come by one of the locations and share your thoughts!

DWR Warehouse Sale - THIS WEEKEND

I'm not quite sure why I'm on the Design Within Reach email list for events when they neglect to send notification about the one we care about: the famed DWR warehouse sale! Just heard that it's happening this weekend, March 27 & 28, in the Potrero Hill warehouse which is adjacent to their PotHill store on the corner Potrero @ Alameda in the City. Hours are brief: 10a-4p today, and 11a-3p tomorrow.

We went to the last warehouse sale 2 years ago at Fort Mason, and found many incredible deals at 30-70% off on great modern furniture (including a George Nelson bench which was damaged but fixable) - definitely worth a look. Full details are here. Thanks to the San Filippos for the heads-up on this one.
