Our little hill in Castro Valley
A new year-long exhibit opens tomorrow (February 23) at The California Museum in Sacramento, devoted to Ray Eames, the understated (and often misidentified) wife in the famous duo with husband and partner Charles. Celebrating her centennial, "Ray Eames: A Century of Modern Design" will not only chronicle the well-known Eames collaborative body of work, but also showcase new information about her early life as a…

Andria and I spent Easter weekend in Los Angeles seeing family and some really great examples of mid-century modern design and architecture. Even though I was born in the Bay, I grew up in Los Angeles in a cool little neighborhood known as Ladera Heights. Ladera is located on the west side of LA, West of La Cienega and North of Centinela to give you an idea. The neighborhood was mostly developed in the 50’s and 60’s and features some incredible mid-century modern architecture usually…

Just thought I'd share this great retro-modern style video intro for local SF artist Brian Barneclo's latest and most ambitious work, Systems Mural Project being planned down by the Caltrain station in San Francisco. I've written about his work…

There's just something about MCM, architecture and LEGOs - besides the official LEGO Architecture sets, there's that Nelson Bench, and now a scale model of Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater built by a Croatian architecture student. Read…

I'm not quite sure why I'm on the Design Within Reach email list for events when they neglect to send notification about the one we care about: the famed DWR warehouse sale! Just heard that it's happening this weekend, March 27 & 28, in the Potrero Hill warehouse which is adjacent to their PotHill store on the corner Potrero @ Alameda in the City. Hours are brief: 10a-4p today, and 11a-3p tomorrow.
We went to the last warehouse…

This is pretty incredible. Someone has built the familiar George Nelson bench (retail about $700 depending on what size you get) out of LEGO plastic toy blocks. And it looks great!

Although initially this project was prompted by the cost of the bench, the Legos ended up costing a few hundred dollars, too, and the final product is not sturdy enough to sit on, but is…

The Wright auction house of Chicago, which specializes in modern design, is holding an Eames Auction April 8, featuring not only many of the classic chairs, room dividers and shelving units, but also more esoteric items including photos, items from their offices, fabric, splints used for manufacturing, speakers and radios! Definitely worth a visit to the site (get out the droolrag!), and if you're so inclined, bids can be made remotely via email and phone as well as in person.…
